How To Maintain A Chopping Board

Caring for your chopping/serving board is important. Especially if you want the item to last. So knowing what to do can help you extend the life of the board and keep it looking good.

Once you finish using a wooden board you should aim to clean it soon after. This keeps food stains and water from penetrating the wood.
To maintain the wood finish avoid cleaning the surface with detergents or rough scouring pads. Also, avoid placing any wooden items in a dishwasher as this will remove any protective coating and could cause permanent damage.

For best results, and to prolong the life of the wood, clean the surface with a soft lightly soaked washcloth or sponge as required. Then, dry immediately afterwards using a lint-free tea towel.

Washing / cleaning your board regularly and quickly after cooking or serving, combined with a proper drying technique will reduce wear and tear on your board and keep it in good shape.

I also suggest that you use food-safe wood oil to nourish and maintain the wood. Often I am asked how often a food-safe wood oil should be applied to a board. There’s no straightforward answer as it depends on use and conditions. As a guide, I suggest that if you find the surface is looking dry or lacking colour, you consider applying the food-safe wood oil.
